The map in FC2 is a console limited map with invisible walls and limited area to roam due to the narrow areas allowed to travel. I laughed when I played it, but it still had a lot going for it in other areas. They promissed the map would not be this way in FC3, but I can almost garuneteed they lied out their asses, just like Dice did with BF3.

Elevation is a big thing in Far Cry 3. You could be at the loot icon, but several hundred meters above or below it. Here are a few things that will help. 1. Go to the local shop, buy maps of the area. It will reveal all loot chests and special items on the map. Very useful. 2. If the loot icon appears on map, hover on it, and set a way point.

Just made a snow map. Thought I was being clever by partially burying everything. Now all things that aren't nailed down are giving clipping errors.
One last thing you can try. When you open the map toggle through filters using button Y and slightly zoom in. Filter option button is also written at bottom edge when you open the map.
