Uses two filters & 3 drain plugs. Takes me about 20 minutes for an oil change. Valves are also every 5K or once a year. Takes maybe 5 minutes to actually check and adjust, but another 1/2 hour to tear it all down to get access to the valves, then put it all back together.

Engine life and maintenance intervals are probably a wash, weight favors the KTM, but stock suspension favors the Honda CRF450L. I don't want a 450 or 500 in slow technical singletrack, but I'd be pleased with either one for the dirt focused dualsport riding that I love

I've owned a 2004 DRZ400S and I currently ride a 2004 KTM 450 EXC. I sold the DRZ because it was more street than dirt. The KTM has a wide ratio transmission that is the envy of the industry. I rode my bike from Glen Helen down to Victoria Gardens this Saturday. It was a 30 mile roundtrip on the 15 freeway.

Posted October 20, 2015. If you change the oil on a regular basis (500-900) miles you can go an easy 6000+ miles before ever tearing into it. Valves need to be checked every 1000 or so miles. The more miles the more often they need to be checked. Mine get checked sometimes every oil change. Kztk7.
